Le grand cahier, which has won literary awards in Europe, describes the effects of war on two boys who live in an unnamed country


In the spring of 2003, the father of a 16-year-old girl in St-Jérôme, Que., complained to school authorities and the news media about this novel. The parent described the novel as “very violent and grossly pornographic.” The school quietly dropped the book from its reading list at the beginning of the 2003–04 school year.
