Forward Thinking Speaker Series: Dr. Safiya Noble

Every February, libraries across Canada celebrate Freedom to Read Week. This annual celebration encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom and access to information. EPL and the Edmonton Community Foundation are participating in Freedom to Read Week by welcoming Dr. Safiya Noble for the first Forward Thinking Speaker Series event of 2019. Her presentation, Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism will take place on February 20th at the Chateau Lacombe Hotel. Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble is an assistant professor at University of Southern California Annenberg School of Communications. Dr. Noble’s academic research focuses on the design of digital media platforms on the internet and their impact on society. Her work is both sociological and interdisciplinary, marking the ways that digital media impacts and intersects with issues of race, gender, culture, and technology design. Dr. Noble’s best-selling book on racist and sexist algorithmic bias in commercial search engines is entitled Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism .

Tickets are now available for purchase on Eventbrite. General Admission tickets are $10 each and Preferred Seating tickets are $75 each. Preferred Seating tickets include a seat near the front of the room, access to a post-event reception with Dr. Noble and a charitable tax receipt for a portion of the ticket price. All ticket proceeds support the Stanley A. Milner Library revitalization project.
