Freedom to Read Week: LGBTQ Literature and Censorship Talk

February 27, 2017

12:30-1:45pm PST

This year Freedom to Read Week runs from Feb 26 - March 4, 2017. It is an annual event that emphasizes the importance of intellectual freedom, reading, and highlights authors whose works have been a target for censorship. The UBC BCLA are pleased to welcome Dr. Robert Bittner who will be holding a talk exploring censorship of LGBTQ+ literature for children and young adults. Dr. Robert Bittner is a specialist in gender and sexuality in children’s and young adult literature. He is an advocate for greater diversity in gender representation within literature for young readers. He loves to book talk novels with LGBTQ content, especially in libraries and queer youth groups. He has served on a number of award committees over the years, including the Newbery Medal, the Printz Award, and the Stonewall Book Award. Coffee, tea and snacks will be available at the event, as well as the chance to win a door prize. We look forward to seeing you there! Tickets are free, please RSVP for a spot below.
