Negotiating Censorship: Marcello Di Cintio & Christina Frangou

February 27 to January 1, 2020

Join the Writers' Guild of Alberta for this special event featuring authors Marcello Di Cintio & Christina Frangou, where we will address both external forms of censorship and how to negotiate self-censorship as well. We look forward to an intimate discussion on various topics associated with freedom of expression in acknowledgment & celebration of Freedom to Read Week. BIOS A multi-year instructor at the WGA WordsWorth youth camp, Marcello Di Cintio is the author of four books, including Walls: Travels Along the Barricades, which won the Writer’s Trust of Canada’s Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing, as well as the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize. In his latest book, Pay No Heed to the Rockets, Marcello reveals the complex story of the Palestinian experience as seen through the lens of its writers, uncovering a humanity, and a beauty, often overlooked by the news media. Christina Frangou is a freelance magazine writer who specializes in writing about health and medicine. Her work has appeared in the Globe and Mail, Avenue, Swerve, Alberta Views, FASHION, and the Huffington Post. In 2017, she won a National Newspaper Award in long feature writing for a story about her experience as a young widow in the aftermath of her husband’s death. A graduate of Carleton University and the London School of Economics, she is the recipient of multiple Alberta Magazine Awards and has been nominated for a National Magazine Award. She is always happier outside.
