Louis Riel et les pays improbable is a French-language children’s book that tells the true story of political leader Louis Riel and the North-West Resistance of 1885.
Challenges in Canada
In April 2022, the Durham District School Board (DDSB) pulled Louis Riel et les pays improbable and other titles from library and classroom shelves. Louis Riel was the only French-language publication removed during this challenge. The DDSB said that the titles were pulled following complaints from Indigenous families but did not specify what aspects of the book were deemed offensive or harmful.
Later that month, the DDSB recirculated all three challenged books following an accelerated review that included consultation with the local Indigenous community.
